Just what is a Co-op anyway?
A cooperative preschool is owned and maintained by the parents of the children enrolled on a non-profit, non-sectarian basis. Parents take turns assisting teachers in the classroom and share in the business operation of the school, thus making it a truly cooperative venture. The cooperative philosophy is based on these very important components: parental involvement, developmentally appropriate programs, and social, emotional, and cognitive skill building by learning through play.
Preschool programs are more successful when parents participate. This remains true throughout a child's education and is one of the most consistent predictors of school success and achievement. Participating parents also benefit by learning from the teacher and other parents and have the opportunity to meet and interact with their children's classmates and parents.
At Northeast, parents are expected to participate in their child's classroom monthly (usually 1 to 2 times a month, depending on class sizes), attend parent education events, and assist in the running of the school by volunteering for one of many necessary jobs. Fundraising is also a part of our responsibility to the school. Many varied fundraising opportunities are offered throughout the school year.
